Quad City Times BIX 7 Provides Festival Back Drop for Korir and Ndereba Wins

Back in May, much of downtown Davenport was flooded for most of the
month when the Mississippi River overflowed its banks, as it is determined
to do from time to time.
At the 27th running of the Quad City Times Bix 7 Miler, it seemed like
the streets would be flooded again, although this time from above, as a
severe thunderstorm buffeted the Quad Cities less than two hours before race
time. Fortunately, the storm blew through before the start, leaving soggy
air but a lingering cloud cover that moderated the high temperatures that
had blanketed Davenport for the previous several days.
The sticky air kept times slow, but couldn't prevent John Korir and
Catherine Ndereba from continuing their hot winning streaks. Coming off
impressive wins at the Utica Boilermaker 15K two weeks ago, both
out-sprinted one of the stronger fields in Bix history to return to the
winner's circle -- Ndereba for the second time and Korir for the third, the
first man to achieve that feat.
Korir's time of 32:24 was well off the 31:59 CR he established two years
ago, but with a deep field and tough conditions, his strategy was to run for
place, not time. Once again unleashing a finishing kick that had carried him
to wins at Cherry Blossom, Peachtree and Utica, Korir bolted from a pack of
five that hit the final straightaway on Third Street virtually together. He
drove through the line 5 seconds up on James Koskei, with Gilbert Okari
third in 32:31.
Ndereba followed a similar strategy, letting Esther Kiplagat handle the
pacesetting chores until they began the descent down the Brady Street hill,
where Ndereba, who won here in 1999, stretched out her long legs to move
into the lead and then sprint away on Third Street.
David Morris (12th, 34:26) and Sylvia Mosqueda (7th, 38:01) were the
first Americans. Mosqueda in particular would have preferred an easier
course and more forgiving weather. She'll attempt to get a qualifying time
for the World Championships in a track 10,000 at Stanford on Monday.
More than 15,000 runners followed the elites over the challenging out
and back route that features two major hills that must be climbed twice. But
in spite of struggling with terrain and the rain, they proved once again
that the Bix 7 festival, with its children's events and popular "Quick Bix"
shorter race, is a midwest rite of summer that consistently makes it to the
top of the "must run" list.
