18th Annual Club Kokomo Charity Run
December 1, 2002
Russiaville, IN

The 18th Annual Club Kokomo Roadrunners Charity Run was held Sunday December 1 and $2,124 was raised to help area teen-agers. Fifty-nine runners and walkers braved the chilly temperatures and nearly 30 mph gusty winds while running or walking on the hilly roads in and north of Russiaville. Afterwards all participants gathered at the Main Street Christian Church Fellowship Hall to partake of a pitch-in lunch consisting of sloppy joes, baked beans, pies, cakes, chips, and other assorted foods.

Instead of an entry fee, participants were encouraged to make a donation. Proceeds will benefit Nesting Doves and Kokomo High School's Magic Closet and Central Middle School's Care Closet.

Nesting Doves nurtures and guides unwed mothers through and beyond their pregnancies. The Magic and Care closets are for all students in Howard County. They are stocked with clothes, shoes, and personal care items.

Whenever the need arises, a counselor takes a student to a closet. To avoid embarrassment, this is done when other students are in class or not at school. Only a few people the closets' locations.

In some cases, the closets have kept students from quitting school for lack of proper clothing. In other situations, they have provided teens with proper attire for the prom, graduation, and job interviews. the toiletries have been used by students who have become temporarily homeless.

Contributions of $50 or more included $700 from New Life Assembly of God, $400 from Charlie Skoog, $100 from the Bill Barnett family, $100 from the Jeff Sheline family, $100 from the Dave White family, and $50 each from John Sites, Rhenda Acton , and Steve Wand. Special thanks to Mr. Gene Parks and the Main Street Christian Church of Russiaville for the use of their fellowship hall.

Club Kokomo has three more activities during the month of December. Wednesday Dec 18 will be the Christmas Lights 5K Fun Run/Walk at 5:30 PM at Highland Park. The group will meet at Rodgers Pavilion and run or walk the park's 3.1 mile course. There is no entry fee and the public is invited.

Tuesday Dec 24 at 9 AM will be the Christmas Eve Day Fun Run/Walk at Highland Park. There is no entry fee and the public is invited.
