Pike's Peek 10K
Silver Spring, MD
May 3, 1997
Montgomery County Road Runners Club, PO Box 3097, Silver Spring, MD 20918
The second running of the Pike's Peek 10K on April 27 was even more
successful than the first. Favored by perfect weather, over 2000 runners
raced down Rockville Pike from Shady Grove Metro to White Flint. Tim
Schuler, 33, of Chambersburg, PA showed his heels to the rest of the pack
taking first place in 30:22. Bea Marie Altieri, 30, of Columbia, MD,
pulled away from the other women to win in 35:56.
Initially, ten men hit the first mile mark in 4:49. Approaching the
second mile, a group of three runners, Jim Hage, Matthew Smith and Tim
Schuler, pulled away from the rest, passing two miles in 9:40. Smith
dropped off the pace and Schuler and Hage ran together for another half
mile. After running even splits for the first few miles, Schuler
gradually distanced himself from everyone else at the halfway point and
continued to pull away as he raced down the Pike to finish in 30:22. Jim
Hage took a commanding hold of second place running strong to finish in
30:59, ahead of Matthew Smith who took third in 31:12. In the women's
race, Martha Merz of Annandale led to the midpoint of the race when
Altieri passed her, extending her lead to win by 33 seconds over Merz
while Jill Geer, Washington, DC, took third in 38:18. The first place
masters male was John Doub, 40, of Waynesboro, PA, who placed sixth
overall in a fast 31:51. In the women's division Gwen Torchia, 47, of
Baltimore finished twelfth overall and beat the other masters women in
40:44, just four seconds ahead of Susan Humphries, 47, of Potomac.
The rest of the field enjoyed the near perfect running conditions as they
made their way down the straightaway of Rockville Pike guided by 2,066
traffic cones and hundreds of race-day volunteers.
A community-based and supported event, Pike's Peek 10K is growing rapidly
in popularity as runners learn of the user-friendly course and the great
food and fun at the post-race festival. There was something for everyone
following the 10K with a 1K Family Run Around and a Toddler Trot of 50m
to encourage the future runners in the family. At the end of the day
happy runners from toddlers to seventy-somethings left the White Flint
festival area, full of satisfaction from a fine day of running, food and
camaraderie.
