IT WAS AWESOME!!
The first annual running of the Awesome Autumn 5K lived up to its name. The weather was AWESOME, the route was fast and, by definition, AWESOME, the volunteers from the Lansing Lions Club were AWESOME, and the camaraderie among the runners celebrating the first official weekend of the fall was AWESOME. This race is sure to become a fall classic.
The weather at race time was 62 degrees with partly cloudy skies and a barely noticeable breeze. Perfect conditions for the "good times" to follow. The race got off to a fast start with a sizeable pack of front runners leading the field on this out and back course. By the turnaround point, the eventual overall male winner, David Bice, had made his move and established a lead that would only grow on the return stretch. Bice was the first finisher, crossing the line in 16 minutes, 42 seconds. Bill Allen held onto second place in 18:31, while Tim Garrett managed to hold off Kisute Kiboko to win third place by 7 seconds in 18:51.
Diana Doherty was the overall female winner leading the ladies with a 23:27 finishing time. Not far behind was Haesu Park who claimed second place in 24:08. The third overall female finisher was Amy Creek who finished strongly in 25:19 to head off a large pack of fast finishing lady runners.
Following the race, trophies were awarded to the overall male and female champions. Age group winners were recognized with a custom made medal that features the symbol of the International Lions Club. The Lansing Lions organized and directed this event and the proceeds will support local eyesight programs, such as funding eyeglasses for underprivileged children, and the Lions Club Academic Scholarship program.
