Cornell University runner Geoff King bested a field of 194 runners over a hilly and fog shrouded course to win the Matzke Memorial in 15:56. The first four finishers, King, Anthony Gallo, Mike McPherson, and New Jersey prep star Mark Bahnuk ran as a pack through the first mile and a half until a King surge opened a 10 second gap. Gallo closed to within 20 feet with 600 meters to go, but King used his 14:47 5000 meter speed to pull away as the course finished on the Maine-Endwell High School track.

In the woman's race, World Cross Country Team member Cheryl Smith ran alone and crossed the finish line in 18:20, a minute better than triathlete and marathoner Christa Winslow.

The race is held to honor the memory of Pete Matzke, who died in an accidental fall at Cornell University in 1997.
